How do I get a library card?
Visit the library’s front desk during open hours with photo identification and verification of current address. Children under the age of 15 will require a parent or guardian to sign for them. You can also register online for a temporary library card. With this option, you can reserve materials, but you must complete registration when picking them up.

Where can I use my library card?
Your library card is useable at Western Allegheny Community Library, Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, and all 70+ libraries in the Allegheny County system.

How do I look up to see if the library has an item?
Books, movies, and more may be looked up in the library catalog. Materials are searchable by author, title, subject, or keyword. You are also able to reserve or request items through the catalog.

How do I access my account?
Sign into your online account to see what you have checked out, view your holds, and renew items. You can also request items directly from the catalog, view your past searches, and get personalized recommendations for items you might like.

What types of things can I borrow?
The library offers books, DVDs, music CDs, magazines, and audiobooks for children, teens, and adults, as well as activity kits, board games, tech items, and other special checkouts.

How many things can I check out at a time?
There are no limits on the number of items per card.

How long can I check something out?
Most materials check out for three (3) weeks. Bestselling adult fiction, magazines, music CDs, and Adult DVDs check out for one (1) week.

Can I have things for longer if I need to?
Most items are set to automatically renew up to six times, as long as there are no holds on them. Exceptions such as hotspots, some tech items, and bestsellers are not renewable and will need to be returned at the end of the initial checkout period.

Where do I return things?
All materials may be returned inside the library or in the outside book drop (with the exception of book baskets or other items too large for the drop). You can also return Western Allegheny Community Library items to any other library in the county system unless otherwise noted.

What if I'm late returning something?
WACL is a "fine free" library, which means all materials owned by, checked out from, or returned to our library will not accrue overdue fines. Individuals that fail to return items will eventually be billed for replacement, but multiple reminder notices will be sent before that happens.

Can I get something from another library?
Materials may be requested from any library in Allegheny County or via Interlibrary Loan from other libraries in the country. Requests may be made through the online catalog or at the library.

How do I access eBooks and other downloads?
eBooks, audiobooks, magazines, music, and streaming videos are all available for free through countywide online resources. Visit Online Resources for more information.

Where do I find articles and do research online?
Databases, articles, periodicals, and other online resources are found under the county eLibrary page. Some resources require your library card to sign in.

How do I sign up for storytimes or events?
Check our Event Calendar for full program listings for children, teens, adults, and families. Registration is required and appreciated for most events.

How do I get on the computer?
Computers are accessed with a valid library card. You receive one hour of use initially and may request extra time if no one is waiting.

Can I print from the computer?
Printing is 25¢ a page for black & white and 55¢ for color.

What if I bring my own laptop or mobile device?
Wireless internet is free and available throughout the building. Please note that wireless printing is also available from a personal device.

What about faxing or copying?
Copying is available at the same cost as printing and is self-serve, although staff may assist if needed. Faxing is $1.50 per page. You can also scan documents to an email address at a rate of 50¢ per page

Do you have tax forms?
A selection of tax forms are available after the first of the year. Please call to see if a specific form is available.
