"Books Before" Reading Challenges

"Books Before" Reading Challenges

It started with "1,000 Books Before Kindergarten," and now we have the "500 Books Before Middle School," "100 Books Before High School," and a "Before Graduation" Challenge! To get started on any of these challenges, sign up for Beanstack and register for the appropriate program. You'll track your reading by logging each book online or in the app.

Participants will be contacted when earned rewards are ready for pick up, and to collect and confirm photo participation. All rewards must be picked up at the Youth Services Desk at the library. Please reach out to Miss Becky at proieb@westernalleghenylibrary.org if you have any questions or need help getting started.

Take the next steps toward early literacy with the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program. Read a book (any book) to your newborn, infant, toddler, or preschooler. The goal is to read 1,000 books before your little one starts Kindergarten. We know you can do it, because if you just read one book a night, you will have read 365 books in a year and over 1,000 in three years (and yes, you can do repeats of favorites!). For every 100 books read, your child will earn a special button that says how many books they've read so far. Once your child has read all 1,000 books, they will receive a certificate of completion and a special reward. For extra motivation, you child's picture can be added to our 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten wall!

Our next step in the "Books Before" challenges kids in Grades K - 5 to read 500 books before Middle School. All tracking is done through Beanstack. The participants' faces will move up our wall of fame, they get a bead to add to a keychain for each 50 books they read, and an honor book is added to the collection when they complete the whole challenge.

Teens in grades 6 - 8 can participate in our 100 Books Before High School Challenge. Following the same format as 1000BBK and 500BBMS, teens are tasked with tracking 100 books before high school. Participants will earn a sticker to put on a water bottle for every 10 books read, move up the wall of fame as they go, and have an honor book added to the collection upon completion.

Teens in grades 9 - 12 can participate in our 50 Books Before Graduation Challenge. Following the same format as the other "Books Before" challenges, teens are tasked with tracking 50 books before they graduate high school. Participants will earn tassels to put on a wooden bookmark for every 10 books read, move up the wall of fame as they go, and have an honor book added to the collection upon completion.
